Then perhaps you should call it $element or something that makes sense.

If Daniel's example does what you need, and you want to find out what is
wrong with your own, alter one thing at a time in his example to make it
exactly like yours and test after each change.

One of these things is not like the other. One of these things doesn't
belong...
