Agree, I'm in North Bergen, NJ with a wife toddler, and a single income.
Its doable. 
The commute for me is 45 min door to door to SOHO.  

I don't want to start a flame war here, but IMHO it seems that you get
more for your money in NJ especially if you go north into Bergenfield
county.

Dunno how far you want to commute, thats up to you. Public Trans is
great here, just look at the train/bus/path/subway lines when you are
looking at places to live and plan accordingly.
