You could use something like 'tamperdata' to see how long each object (as mentioned) below is taking to load.
If its something OOP/Code related, maybe a PHP Profiler would help..
Wish I could offer some assitance w/the profiler, but never had time to get one running.

significant speed increase. One strange thing I notice is that the
script appears to continue processing after all elements on the page
are correctly displayed.
Are you sure that you are not having any media objects (image, swf etc), which are linked with the wrong path, and the server cannot find that, or not using any embed tags in the output, which does not have corresponding plugin on the viewing browser.
Just a long thought..
